Task 07: Discerning Color
Understand and explore the variations in monochromatic and color-based palettes by observing films, extracting colors and tonal values, and translating these into different forms. This task aims to enhance your understanding of color theory and its application in design.
Project Details
PART 01
Objective:
Compare the perception and understanding of environments depicted in a black & white film and a colored film.
1. Film Observation:
- Watch the following films:
- The Seventh Seal (1957) - Dir. Ingmar Bergman (Black & White)
- The Fall (2006) - Dir. Tarsem Singh (Colored)
2. 300-word Comparison:
- Write a description of how the perception and understanding of the environments and compositions change across the two films. Refer to the content of the film and the director’s artistic choices. Consider the emotive properties of the color palette and how emotions are achieved in the absence of color.
PART 02
Objective:
Extract and understand the variations in color and tonal values from selected stills of the films.
1. Select a Still:
- Choose one still from each film. Ensure the selected frames have strong compositional qualities, depth, and interesting use of color or tonal values.
2. Extract Colors and Tonal Values:
- For the colored still (from "The Fall"):
- Extract 5 different colors.
- Create tonal value scales for each extracted color using poster paints.
- For the black & white still (from "The Seventh Seal"):
- Extract various tonal values of grey.
- Create a Munsell grayscale chart in both pencil and poster paints.
PART 03
Objective:
Translate the selected frames from colored to black & white and black & white to colored, using the information gathered from the tonal value scales.
1. Translate Frames:
- Using the previously developed Munsell chart, translate the colored frame into black & white and the black & white frame into a colored one. Critically analyze the visual effects of the new color combinations.
2. Layer Analysis:
- Divide each scene/frame into multiple layers.
- Examine the interaction of these layers in terms of subjects/objects and the morphology of color.
This task will deepen your understanding of color theory, its application, and the technical aspects of color production and diversification in design.
